well, it's not so much "hand written" as "comic book" style lettering, which looks appropriate to the drawing style.
comic book lettering promises (to the reader/beholder) a certain kind of narrative pace, all of the story-telling tricks of comic books (flashbacks, etc) also a sense of loss (many comic book heroes (heroines too, I imagine) have lost something/someone)...
interesting choice, but let's be clear, it ain't just "handwritten type," but a specific style of same, and the atmospherics that come with it.
